both-sides-now-2
Both Sides Now

Both Sides Now captures the dramatic meeting of land, sea, and sky at Wright's Beach along Northern California's Sonoma Coast. Photographed on medium-format film, the image looks out across rugged headlands and the Pacific Ocean beneath an immense, shifting sky. For Kim, who grew up in Ireland, the green coastal landscape carries an unexpected familiarity, recalling the windswept shores and countryside of his childhood.

The title references Joni Mitchell's 1967 song Both Sides Now, a meditation on perspective and the ways our understanding of the world changes with experience. As both a musician and photographer, Kim finds a natural connection between the song's themes and the landscape before him. The photograph holds two places in conversation: the California coast he now calls home and the Irish landscapes that shaped his earliest memories. It is a reflection on how a familiar place can reveal something new, and how a distant landscape can unexpectedly bring us home.

Originally created for WEST OF MORNING — Analog Landscapes of Northern California, Kim’s inaugural exhibition at fís Gallery, this Studio Edition offers another way to collect the work while preserving the character and craftsmanship of the original photograph.

Each print is produced on Hahnemühle fine art paper, presented with a 3-inch archival white mat, and finished in a handcrafted solid wood frame with a 1.6-inch-wide profile, made in Germany.
