Holding Fast

Holding Fast captures the remains of the Point Reyes, a weathered fishing boat resting along the shores of Tomales Bay in Inverness, a small coastal community in Northern California. Built in 1944 as a World War II launch vessel, the boat originally transported soldiers between aircraft carriers and ports in the San Francisco Bay Area. After the war, it found a second life as a commercial salmon boat, working the waters of Tomales Bay during the 1960s and 1970s.

Fishing was once central to the economy of this sheltered inlet, where generations of families made their living from the sea. Eventually brought ashore for a restoration that never materialized, the Point Reyes settled into the mudflats, enduring decades of tides, storms, and a damaging fire in 2016. Kim photographed its remains in 2026, capturing a vessel whose weathered hull holds the traces of nearly a century of California maritime history.

Originally created for WEST OF MORNING — Analog Landscapes of Northern California, Kim’s inaugural exhibition at fís Gallery, this Studio Edition offers another way to collect the work while preserving the character and craftsmanship of the original photograph.

Each print is produced on Hahnemühle fine art paper, presented with a 3-inch archival white mat, and finished in a handcrafted solid wood frame with a 1.6-inch-wide profile, made in Germany. Available in black, white, or natural oak, each Studio Edition arrives ready to hang.
