Veronica Guerin tells the story of the Irish investigative journalist whose reporting on Dublin’s criminal underworld made her both a national figure and a target.
In 2002, Kim and musician Todd Montgomery began arranging traditional Irish tunes with a more contemporary approach. They were soon joined by bassist Hutch Hutchinson and drummer Jay Bellerose for a series of informal performances at a coffeehouse in Topanga Canyon.
A few weeks later, someone who had heard the band perform called about bringing the musicians into a recording session for an upcoming Irish film. Until then, Kim had worked primarily with singer-songwriters. The prospect of recording live with musicians, orchestra and written charts at Hans Zimmer’s studio was a significant step into new territory.
Kim remembers arriving at the session with one thought: don’t be the first one to make a mistake. He wasn’t. He was invited back the following day for overdubs.
The film was Veronica Guerin, with a score by Harry Gregson-Williams, and the experience became one of Kim’s favorite recording sessions.
